Feel Like Yourself
Daylight Saving Time has come and gone, but you may still be feeling the effects of losing that one precious hour. (I know I am.) As you adjust to the shift in daylight, your body also is reacting to the days getting longer and the weather getting warmer. You may feel different. More energized. Or…you may feel the reverse. Tired. Worn out. Just “off.”
You’re not alone. There is no shortage of memes bemoaning the disruption time and seasonal changes can cause. The good news is that we don’t have to simply take the disruption in stride, pretending that we are adjusting just fine when, well, we’re not. Instead, we can implement the following mindful practices to stay centered and in tune with ourselves.
Spend time outdoors – The extra hour in the evening may be a perfect time to fit in a short walk after work. Even a casual stroll around the block can be enough to reflect on your day and release stress. Take notice of your surroundings. Listen to the birds, the wind rustling the trees, the children playing in the yard before dinner. Those steps towards awareness may be just what you need.
Meditate daily – The early morning is a bit darker now with the recent time change, but that quiet moment before anyone else stirs may be just the right opportunity for you to sit and simply be. Slow your breathing. Calm your thoughts. Yes, that to-do list is a mile long, but for a few minutes, it can wait. Your time with yourself is important, too.
Move your body – Movement has been proven to release tension and energy that is causing soreness and fatigue. During time and seasonal changes, this can be especially beneficial. Pick a pastime you like—walking, yoga, stretching, light weightlifting—and set aside time each day to focus on your body. Even small movements can help.
Nourish yourself – When we’re tired or feeling less like ourselves, we can sometimes let healthy decisions slide. But seasonal changes offer an additional way to fill our bodies with good food. Take time to savor the fresh produce that is at its peak or select foods that you don’t eat at other times of the year. Pay attention to how your body feels after being nourished with the nutrients it needs.
The options mentioned above all practice self-care. They are closely tied to noticing what you need. By checking in with yourself and affirming daily that you matter, it’ll become easier to step into the new season. Don’t rush the process, and don’t feel like you have to do it alone.
