What Is Getting Between You and You?
Consider the relationship you have with these terms: “auto-pilot,” “numb,” and “default.” Do these words sum up how you’ve been feeling about life lately?
When life becomes stressful, overwhelming, and just too much, the natural tendency may be to numb yourself from all the chaos and pain. You may sink inward and isolate yourself. You may get through the day without any purpose or drive, feeling unattached from others and work, carrying a lost hope that things will just get better. You may lose sight of what it means to be you.
Or…you may medicate your way through the pain.
Substance abuse and addiction have wide-reaching implications in our society. Just google the opioid crisis in our country that continues to escalate. Medicating, though, is any behavior or numbing agent that a person uses to distract themselves from trauma and pain. Shopping, gambling, even “good” things like exercising and work can be used to keep a person from feeling the pain of their life experiences.
Unfortunately, our culture doesn’t highlight the need to understand such sneaky or avoidant behaviors. In fact, it even celebrates the person who seems to have it all together all the time (e.g., social media). Who cares if that same person falls apart as soon as they step out of the spotlight?
We at The Healing Collective care.
While society is all about hiding imperfection, struggles, and pain, we understand that in order to heal, we have to feel. It’s not about shame. It’s about understanding and compassion. It’s about creating a support system that will guide you through recovery.
